Thomas Samuel was born 5:39am on Saturday 4th February 2012, weighing 6lb 2oz (imperial being the SI unit of measure for babies), the birth was by caesarean section. Baby and mum are both doing well. Here he is only a couple of minutes old:
And now, on the 7th February:
I don’t want to write about the details of the labour, it feels like an invasion of privacy, all I can say is that I now consider women to be heroes and scarily superhuman! I am a very proud dad.

I've worked as a scientist for the last 30 years, at various universities, a large home and personal care company, a startup in Liverpool called The Sensible Code Company (formerly ScraperWiki Ltd), GBG and now as a consultant in data science.

Thanks! Compared to the preceding few hours the operating theatre was very calm *and* the top picture is of when I first held him!
Congratulations to you both, I hope all are well? Thomas Samuel sounds better than Beetle, is he named after the famous Beetle photographer?

Thanks! Yes, all doing well – we’re hoping that everyone will be home tomorrow. I hadn’t appreciated the existence of an appropriate Thomas Samuel, “Samuel” is actually for his great-grandfather – Thomas was a name we both liked and had no bad connotations for Sharon via the students she has taught!
He was having a very thorough peer around this afternoon, apparently he was unusually alert on coming out too.

If you change your mind about wanting to talk about the awfulness of labour then I will certainly listen as long as I can tell you how awful mine was….8 months on and I still feel that talking about it is helping me get over it….
He looks lovely if slightly orange :).

I suspect the slight orange tinge is a colour balance problem arising from lighting and stuff. He had jaundice but was fixed by the magic blue light.
The midwives have all been saying he looks cute (obviously I can offer no unbiased opinion – I think he’s gorgeous), he’s a little bit small and at the moment prefers to fold up all his arms and legs which makes him difficult to change!
